fuel leak on a full tank
K, i found that when i filled my fuel tank up tonight a have a fuel leak,
I pulled into the garage and it started leaking like a fean. gas all over the floor. theres a ventilation hose that comes from the top of the fuel tank (access from under the rear seat, under the oval plate) and runs up a metal tube, out in the outer rear wheelwell (outside) and connects to the top of the gas filler. now my ? is can i replace it with a fuel hose from a autostore or does it have to be OEM, im asking cause its a breaded hose. Thanks for the input...... And would this leak cause problems with how the car runs, meaning loss of fuel pressure, or etc this is the first time i totally filled it since i bought the car and for some reason it ran like shit before, wondering if this might of been the problem |

This link should illustrate the plumbing.
Its just a vent tube, so you can certainly run the local auto parts store and buy any low pressure fuel line to make the rapair. Most fuel line will be braided, but some will be for high pressure (fuel injection) versus low pressure carburated applications. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...07&hg=16&fg=10 |

You could replace it with High pressure rubber hose designed for fuel injection but there is a good possibility of the hose getting abraded in short order so protect it where ever it gets close to another component.
The metal line(s) that run across the top of the tank should probably be inspected as well. The lines are clipped into place to reduce the possibility of abrasion (sparks in this case). Where exactly is the leak? The top of the tank itself? or did you go slightly overfull and the gas is running to the emissions circuit? m |

always stop filling when the nozzle shuts itself off. overfilling will cause fuel to back up into the vapor tank and bog up your evap canister
all those vent hoses can be replaced with any fuel hose. all they should be carrying is fuel VAPOR. except for the large diameter filler hose. did you remove the panel from behind the rear wheel so you can see up behind the filler nozzle? this is where the vapor canister and the vent lines are all hidden.

I didnt over fill i only put like $40 cnd @0.76/L and i noticed that it was running down the hose so i assumed thhat there was a puncture somewhere up the hose. would this cause running problems with hesitation of the car like loss of pressure in the fuel line

you going to have to find out WHERE exactly the leak is. basically the gas tank feeds gas to the engine and receives the extra fuel the engine doesn't use. also for emissions purposes, the tank is vented through a charcoal canister and then back into your intake for reburning. the DME controls the venting of the canister through the purge valve and purge valve relay. if raw fuel is getting into the canister, your engine could have issues. also, if you tank vents are plugged, you are creating a vacuum inside the tank which is known as vapor lock.

one simple thing you can also do is disconnect the evap canister from the intake. the greenies may not like you though. on top of the canister is a hose that runs under the intake plenum. remove this and plug it, leaving the canister venting to atmosphere. you'd better plug it well or you now have an intake leak

Could the leak come from the dryed-out seal around the fuel-level assembly?
